Advanced EMT
The major focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care to those patients who are in need of more care than can be offered by the EMT Basic. AEMTs function as part of a holistic EMS response and operate under medical oversight. They perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance.
Course Information
The National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards outline contains the minimal terminal objectives for entry-level EMS personnel and the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards – Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Instructional Guidelines provide the instructional guidance utilizing competency based outcomes instead of specific subject time of instruction requirements. It is recognized that there is additional specific education that will be required of AEMT’s who operate in the field, i.e. ambulance driver training, heavy and light rescue, basic extrication, special needs, and so on. It is also recognized that this information might differ from locality to locality, and that each training program, or system should identify and provide special training requirements. This curriculum is intended to prepare a medically competent AEMT to operate in the field. Enrichment programs and continuing education will help fulfill other specific needs for the AEMT’s education. Kentucky specific supplemental curriculum for AEMT’s can be found on the KBEMS Forms page under Advanced EMT (AEMT).
